Food Crisis Continuous
“In 2023, about 733 million people in the world will face hunger, which means that one in 11 people will not have enough food. In Africa, where the situation is worst, one in five people is hungry.” Recently, the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations released the 2024 “State of Food Security and Nutrition in the World” report. The report warned that the sustainable development goal of zero hunger in the world by 2030 may be difficult to achieve. The global pace of hunger eradication has not advanced but regressed, and the level of food shortage has regressed 15 years to the level between 2008 and 2009.
The number of hungry people is increasing rapidly
The report shows that the global hunger level remains high for the third consecutive year. In 2023, 713 million to 757 million people will suffer from undernourishment, with a median of 733 million, an increase of about 152 million from 2019.
The distribution of undernourished people in the world varies greatly from region to region. Africa continues to rise, accounting for 20.4% of the world, while Asia remains stable, accounting for 8.1% of the world. However, as the region has more than half of the world’s hungry people, it still faces severe challenges. Latin America has made some progress, accounting for 6.2% of the world. From 2022 to 2023, the hunger situation in West Asia, the Caribbean and most sub-regions in Africa will show an intensifying trend.
The agricultural financing gap is widening
The report shows that the financing gap is becoming increasingly prominent and is becoming an urgent problem to be solved for global food security. And those countries that need to expand financing the most often face more prominent financing difficulties. The report analyzes the financing situation of 119 low-income and middle-income countries. About 63% of the countries have limited or fair financing channels. In addition, 74% of the countries are troubled by one or more major factors that exacerbate food insecurity and malnutrition.
